Survey by Qualaroo

Corridors, Stairways and Corners

A new publication designed by artist Clare Thornton to help us to understand Arnolfini's past performance programme - through doing it ourselves.

This new artist book was produced by Clare Thornton (with City Edition Studio) during a six month period of research within Arnolfini's dance archive in 2013.

Re-interpreting the model of a gallery guide or programme note as a kind of score, the book intends to evoke a selection of scenes, actions and movements performed here at Arnolfini by an international cast of artists. Clare Thornton is interested in how we might begin to get to know these past art-works through 'doing' them.

Using the documentary photographs, brochures and programme notes held in the Reading Room, she selected six performance pieces that took place at Arnolfini between 1976-1998. Then, working with concrete poetry and cut-up techniques, she developed these traces in to a collection of open instructions.

The page reproduced here is a taster of the book, and an invitation for you to revive or re-imagine a performance at Arnolfini. A Spotify album has also been specially compiled to accompany the experience.
