If you missed Hedwig Houben's talk then please take the opportunity to listen again. This talk was part of Art in the City a series organised by Arnolfini, Bristol City Council, Spike Island and the University of the West of England.
In this talk Houben discusses her first solo exhibition in the UK, at Spike Island, which includes a number of key works made over the last five years, encompassing film, performance, sculpture and text.
Dutch artist Houben makes sculptural works that are mediated by film, performance and language. She foregrounds the acts of making and talking about art in awkward performances that reveal to the viewer the questions she asks of her own activity and process. She has described her work as attempting to understand how the process of making works ‘relates to the structures that we create together within society – rules, assumptions, expectations.’
