Maria Thereza Alves was born in Brazil. She was one of the co-founders of the Green Party in Sao Paulo. She attended the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City, where she studied under Hans Haacke. She now lives in Europe. In 2000 she was awarded a DAAD scholarship (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdients/German Academic Exchange Service), Her work has been exhibited widely across Europe and North America. Exhibitions include In Transit at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (1993); the 49th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale (2001); Rest in Space at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2003); Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, Niigata-Ken (2003); Liverpool Biennial (2004); Displaced at the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin (2005); Quanahuac at the Basel Kunsthalle (2006) and Wherever We Meet at the San Francisco Art Institute (2007).
