Born in London. He studied engineering at Christs College, Cambridge from 1942. In 1946 he studied sculpture at Regent Street Polytechnic, London and was at the Royal Academy Schools, London 1947-52. He worked as assistant to Henry Moore 1951-53 and then started to teach at St. Martin's School of Art, London. He also taught at Bennington College, Vermont, USA 1963- 65.
