Meschac Gaba was born in 1961 in Cotonou, Benin, and now lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He began studying art in Zossou Gratien's workshop in Cotonou and then at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam from 1996 to 1997. His work has been featured in the 2nd Taipei Biennial (2001); Documenta XI (2002) and the 50* International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale (2003). In 2006 he contributed to the Sao Paulo Bienal (Brazil), preceded by a summer residency in Recife. Other important residencies include the annual residency at the PS1 studios, New York (2003-04). Gaba has had solo shows at S.M.A.K., Gent (2000); Witte de With, Rotterdam (2001); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2002); Tate Modern, London (2005); and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2005).
