Helena Maleno works as an activist and journalist in El Ejido, Andalusia. She studied journalism in Madrid, returned to El Ejido for many years and now lives in Tangier, Morocco. Her main focus is structural change in agriculture, border economies, and migration. She works for various newspapers and radio stations, runs an informal social support network for illegal migrants from North Africa, and participates in cultural and activist events connected with border issues. For many years, she has collaborated with the Catalonian photographer Alex Munoz. Maleno is a member of a network for women authors from southern Spain and the Maghreb. She has edited a number of videos in collaboration with other activists on social justice for migrants, particularly migrant women in this border economy.
