Philipp Gehmacher lives and works in Vienna. He studied Contemporary Dance at the London Contemporary Dance School and choreography, Esthetics and Dance Sociology at the Laban Center London.
His works have featured in numerous festivals and venues around the world in countries such as Canada, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, France, Austria and Czechoslovakia. Gehmacher’s interest in gesture, touch and space has led his practise to often consider notions of embodiment and question formal conventions and to work in a range of contexts. Since 2007 he has directed others on stage and collaborated across artforms with artists such as US-American choreographer Meg Stuart and Vladimir Miller, and since 2008 Philipp has presented iterations of the ‘Walk + Talk’ series - a form of lecture performance, in which choreographers talk about movement while moving – most recently at Dance Umbrella in the UK. Earlier this year he premiered a new stage work ‘solo with Jack’ at Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz as part of the Festival ImPulsTanz and worked at the Leopold Museum on the installation ‘grauraum mit Egon Schiele’. Since 2011 Philipp has also worked in theatre on the project ‘Das Erdbeben in Chili’ following an invitation by the venue Schauspiel Köln.
