Described in the 1940's as being, with Henry Moore, one of the 'most significant artists of our time' (Edward Sackville-West). Painter of a famous potrait of Winston Churchill (1954) which was burnt by Churchill's wife for its uncompromising portrayal of her aged husband. Designer of the huge 'Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph' tapestry commissioned for Coventry cathedral.
