The book accompanies the first retrospective of Belgian artist Joëlle Tuerlinckx, co-produced by Arnolfini with Wiels in Brussels and Haus der Kunst in Munich. Tuerlinckx' practice is rooted in the history of institutional critique, but joined with a unique sense for materials and spaces, resulting in expansive, complex installations. Film projections, video, drawings, collages, photographs and found objects are combined with subtle alterations to the spaces and gestures that highlight the time and space of the viewing experience.
While each of the exhibitions focuses on a specific aspect in the artist's work, the book offers an overwiew about Tuerlinckx' work. The texts are accompanied by images, specifically selected and annotated by the artist, making the book at the same time a reference and an artist's publication: a retrospective designed by the artist.
Joëlle Tuerlinckx, born 1958 in Brussels, has exhibited widely since the early 1990s. She had solo exhibitions, amongst others, at the Reina Sofía in Madrid (2009), Mamco - Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva (2007), The Drawing Center, New York (2006), The Power Plant, Toronto (2005), the Renaissance Society, Chicago (2003), and a major presentation at documenta 11 (2002). Wor(l)d(k) in Progress? will be her most comprehensive presentation in the UK to date and will be on view at Arnolfini 7 December 2013 – 9 February 2014.
