Founding director of multiple award winning practice Wilkinson Eyre (architects of Explore@Bristol, Bristol Metropolitan and Brunel Academies and the Dyson Headquarters at Malmesbury) Chris Wilkinson joins us to present recent work, including the 2012 Lubetkin prize winning 105-storey Guangzhou East Tower in China.

High Rise and Other Stories Lectures:

To coincide with the Architecture Centre’s Autumn exhibition, High-Rise by Peter Bobby (9 October to 17 November), two of Britain’s most accomplished architects present their work, including two radically different approaches to high-rise design, curated by the Architecture Centre in partnership with UWE.

In the first of two lectures in this series, hear about the work of Chris Wilkinson OBE.

Following experience at practices including Denys Lasdun & Partners, Foster Associates, Michael Hopkins Architects and Richard Rogers & Partners, Chris Wilkinson set up Chris Wilkinson Architects, in 1983 and Wilkinson Eyre Architects 1987.   Promoting a fresh new approach to architecture, he has combined a lifelong interest in art with a fascination for science, technological innovation and a sense of history.

His contribution to architecture has been recognised by the award of an OBE in the Millennium Honours List, election to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2006, and an Honorary Fellowship of the American Institute of Architecture in 2007.

Wilkinson Eyre’s design for Guangzhou’s new East Tower was submitted as part of a competitive land tender to the city of Guangzhou. The proposals included a 475m tower with 105 storeys of accommodation. The tower will contain 285,000sqm of accommodation, predominately office space with restaurant and public sightseeing levels located at the top of the building. Located in Zhujiang New Town, the East Tower sits adjacent to Wilkinson Eyre’s International Finance Centre (currently under construction) but retains its own distinctive character and identity.
