Artists have been exploring the potential of the moving image as a medium of artistic expression since the early film experiments of the Surrealists. This short introductory course offers an exploration of the key ideas and approaches that have emerged in over a century of film and video art. Six lectures examine different thematic and historical aspects in artists’ moving image, focusing on significant artists and films, from early pioneers to contemporary practitioners. Lectures will be accompanied by clips, screenings of rarely seen films and a visit to Picture This atelier.

The Magical Consciousness exhibition offers a timely opportunity to explore some of the ways that current artists are working with the moving image. This short workshop seminar explores the ideas behind contemporary practices, discussing some of the contradictions and diversities of the current landscape in artists moving image culture and considering what new practices and ways of thinking about film have emerged in recent times. We will screen and discuss and contextualize a number of recent artist works, including moving image works on display in the galleries.
Price includes entry to film screenings at 5.30pm in the cinema which follow the workshop.
