Bill Owens

Suburbia Revisited

Photographer Bill Owens is highly influential for an entire generation of American photographers in the lineage of social documentary. He gained acclaim for his series of black & white photographs entitled Suburbia, documenting the birth of newly-built suburban neighbourhoods in California during the early 70s. As a newcomer himself to one of these suburban districts, Owens captured images of families, furniture, lawns, street parties and formica, offering an insight into the aspirations for the domestic American dream at the time. Owens’ photo essay is candid and charming in its portrayal of this significant era.

The original Suburbia photographs will be presented alongside the world premiere of Owens’ new series, entitled New Suburbia, offering a present-day insight into some of the same locations that he originally documented a generation ago. This will be Owens’ first solo exhibition in the UK.

An Art/Fun activity pack will be available from the Bookshop for this exhibition. Price £1.00
