A Rough Guide to… Interdisciplinarity

Why do we divide our knowledge into different disciplines? How can we change and transcend these divisions? What role might artists play within these new ways of working? This study day is led by Alan Boldon, artist and Co-Director of Arts & Ecology at Dartington College of Arts and artist Ansuman Biswas. Coinciding with Starting At Zero and Playing John Cage, the event will involve historical and contemporary background and discussion and is aimed at anyone interested in one of the hot issues of today.

In his talk ‘After Black Mountain’ Andrew Crozier will discuss the emergence of the Black Mountain school of poetry.Using Keat’s famous negative capability letter, stressed by Charles Olson in The Special View of History, and the figure of Ishmael, whom Olson hailed as the post-individual man in his study of Melville, Clive Meachen will illuminate some of the elements that lie at the heart of Black Mountain practice.

Andrew Crozier was Professor of English at the University of Sussex. In 1966 he founded the journal The English Intelligencer. He has edited the works of the modernist poets John Rodker and Carl Rakosi.

Clive Meachen teaches American Literature at Aberystwyth University and ran the influential Verbals Poetry Series. He studied under Ed Dorn at Essex University.

‘And you Poet, whats in the cards for you’ Ed Dorn, Gunslinger

An evening of readings and film with a line-up of poets and writers for whom the spirit of experimentation and risk, so vital to Black Mountain, is still alive today. Featuring short performances by Tom Pickard, Nicholas Johnson, Wendy Mulford, Rebecca Marshall, Iain Sinclair, John Hall, Roy Fisher, Alice Notley, James Kelman and Tom Raworth.

The evening will be introduced by Andrew Crozier and will include a presentation by Colin Still of unseen Stan Brakhage and Robert Creeley footage.
