Music In search of a meeting place
Tuesdays from 5 October to 23 November 8pm gallery one Tutor Jolyon Laycock. B Mus.,M.Phil , ARCM Course fee £10.40
This eight week course examines how popular and classical music have influenced one-another during this century. Arnolfni's music programme contains several living examples of composers such as David Bedford, Michael Nyman, Roger Smalley and Tim Souster who have integrated elements of rock music into their compositions.
Earlier in the century George Gershwin drew on the jazz idiom, and Bartok assimilated Hungarian folk-song into his style. The course looks at many other fascinating examples from Stravinsky's collaboration with Woody Herman, to the Emmerson-Lake and-Palmer version of Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", or Andrew Lloyd Webber's variations on Paganini for cello and pop-group.
Course run by Bristol University Department of Extramural Studies in conjunction with Arnolfini Music.
