Caustic, rueful and profound in equal measure, British director Terence Davies is at the top of his craft with Of Time and the City. A love song and a eulogy to Liverpool, it is also a response to memory, reflection and the experience of losing a sense of place as the skyline changes and time takes it toll.

Extraordinarily moving, this adaptation contains many of the director’s familiar themes – the joys and agonies of family life, the onset of adulthood, the oppressive hypocrisy of organised religion – alongside his hallmark measured pacing, immaculate compositions and elegant camera work. Here, the setting is small-town’ 40s Georgia where a washed-up nightclub singer arrives and stirs things up.
