Elastic Frontiers

Dan Shipsides

Fri 22 – Mon 25 September

Free, Gallery 1

Dan Shipsides’ practice explores creative relationships to space based on experience. He often uses ways of working familiar in outdoor sports or pursuits. Elastic Frontiers is the first project he has developed in collaboration with children and offers insight into the value and excitement of learning, achievement and risk taking. In particular, the project examines how space is utilised by young people learning about themselves and their environment.

Six children from Oldbury Court School, Downend met with Dan on a monthly basis over the last year. In this time he mentored the children as they learnt to see, explore, move and climb in new ways through sessions at the school, a local climbing wall and then out in urban and rural landscapes.

Elastic Frontiers presents new video and photography images and an installation which records and documents this project. There is also a new interactive sculpture (moved here from the school) built from school tables and adapted to become a climbing structure.
