OPERATION BIKE BLOCK
Workshop Timetable
DAY 1 Tues 24 Nov
10am – 11.30am - The art of Conviviality and Consensus
This session will introduce how non hierarchical groups work, including techniques and tools used to create affinity groups and make decisions by consensus. We will also agree upon our group culture and the process to ensure a successful and enjoyable week for all. Come to find out and begin the experience of working in the Bike Bloc. Expect seriousness and play.
11.45am – 1pm - This is not about a bicycle: The art of bikes and other fantastic pedal vehicles
2pm – 3.30pm Operation Bike Bloc: designing and plotting (part 1)
In this session we will agree upon our main strategic objectives and begin the process of dreaming up what a swarm of rebel bikes would look like: How would they flow through the streets? What happens when we weld four bikes together to make a nomadic barricade? What story would a bike bloc tell in the media representations of the protests? (Facilitated by Hannah/Isa/JJ)
4pm – 5.30pm DIY bike engineering (part 1)
Learn the basics of making bikes: what are the main elements of the bikes? How do they fit together? What mistakes not to make to have a roadworthy bicycle? (Facilitated by Patrick/Seb/Tom)
DAY 2 - Wed 25 Nov
10am – 11am The art of Conviviality and Consensus
More games and techniques to make our group a convivial and creative space in which to work. Come to find out and experience working in the Bike Bloc. Expect seriousness and play.
11.15am – 1pm Permaculture: The art of building beneficial relationships - A taster
The Bike Bloc will strive to use the design principles, ethics and philosophy of Permaculture, whose central tenet is that by observing the way ecosystems work, we can learn to build systems that are energy efficient, resilient, waste free and productive. A taster of the basics of this radical design system.
2pm – 4pm Operation Bike Bloc: designing and plotting (part 2)
Building on our ideas from yesterday’s session, we will continue the Bike Bloc designs and develop further ideas for swarming rebel bicycle gangs and tools of creative resistance.
4.30pm – 5.30pm DIY bike engineering (part 2)
This session will expand our knowledge on mending and making bikes and introduce skill sharing in welding.
DAY 3 - Thurs 26 Nov
10am – 11am The art of Conviviality and Consensus
More games and techniques to make our group a smooth working organism. Come to find out and experience working in the Bike Bloc. Expect seriousness and play.
11.15am – 4pm Operation Bike Block: designing and plotting (part 3)
The final designs of the Bike Bloc come together and we start to organise working groups for our construction Laboratory in the next 3 days.
4.30pm – 5.30pm DIY bike engineering (part 3)
More skills shared in bike engineering and welding.
DAYS 4 – 6 Fri 27 to Sun 29 Nov
OPEN LAB : Climate Campers, The Laboratory of Insurrectionary Imagination and friends live and direct in the container building the prototype bike bloc. All welcome.
Monday 30 Nov – Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the world shattering anticapitalist protests in Seattle, a day of action will target Climate Criminals across the world. The prototype bike bloc might have its first outing in the streets of Bristol. We also take ‘tat down’, i.e. clear the space in the gallery and the container outside.
