The Far West Metro ‘franchise store’ is located in The Mall Bristol, which is visited by around one million shoppers per month.
In a new commission by Maverick Press, titled from The Bank of Hell, artist Melanie Jackson has imported a Hong Kong Joss shop to The Mall. Joss goods are paper monetary offerings that are burnt with incense for ancestors. In recent years Joss offerings have responded to the marketplace and take the form of paper replicas of everyday consumer items including iPods, laptops, roast duck dinners, pharmaceuticals, microwaves and cars. Shoppers are also invited to participate in the production of replicas commissioned for The Mall. Offerings from the franchise store can be exchanged for donations to the Sichuan Earthquake Appeal. The artist has also produced a limited edition print for sale in Arnolfini bookshop.
The projects of Cao Fei, Gunilla Klingberg, Michael Lin, Miessen & Ploughfields and Support Structure are re-contextualised at the store which is staffed by artworkers from the Plan 9 Trade Union who work with shoppers to facilitate exchange. Highlighting the relationship between workers and capital, Plan 9 Trade Union has negotiated its terms and conditions of employment with the Far West Metro producers. The resulting agreement is available in store and can be downloaded from Plan 9’s website.
You can find Far West Metro on the ground floor of The Mall Bristol between Dr & Herbs Chinese Remedies and Woolworths. For a location map and access information visit www.themall.co.uk
