Fri 15 & Sat 16 May
‘The Fertilizer festival is a short, sharp blast of air from another planet.’ The Guardian

Fertilizer’s mission is to seek out musicians who are doing something really distinctive, whose music epitomizes the scene from their country and translates across national borders. Now it brings the best in contemporary music and film from Poland to Arnolfini over two nights.

Presented in association with SoundUK, The Hub and Rich Mix.

Fri 15 May, 8.00pm – 11.00pm
£10.00 Advance

Friday night showcases three of the most exciting bands from Poland’s exploding underground jazz, avant-rock, noise and electronic scenes. Sing Sing Penelope’s line up was handpicked from jazz and avant-rock players who cut their teeth at legendary club night BRAIN. Contemporary Noise Sextet evolved from a studio concept, playing rapturous live shows out across Europe; sound manipulator Jacaszek’s live trio inventively combine electronics with acoustic instruments to create dense and cinematic textures.

Nadjieja (Hope) (CTBA)
Sat 16 May, 5.30pm
£5.50/£4.00 concs
A lonely young man who witnesses an art crime confronts the unscrupulous art dealer responsible, who, for reasons he can hardly understand, goes about trying to buy back the painting from his shadowy contacts – a suicidally dangerous business. An intriguing and rewarding film written by Krzysztof Piesiewicz, screenwriter of some of Kieslowski’s best known films, his tone and content unmistakable, pregnant with enigmatic meaning and replete with a dreamy sense of the uncanny.
Dir. Stanislaw Mucha Poland 2007 1h 41m Subtitled

Wesele (The Wedding) (CTBA)
Sat 16 May, 7.30pm
£5.50/£4.00 concs
A disastrous wedding is nominally financed by the bride’s father on the back of what turns out to be a whole string of deeply dodgy deals, all of which graphically unravel during the celebrations. Severed digits, dead bodies, exploding toilets, forbidden nookie and gallons of vodka ensue. If all this makes it sound like a gross-out comedy, think again: the laughs are jet black.
Dir. Wojciech Smarzowski Poland 2004 1h 49m Subtitled
