The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

Arguably the film that most influenced Fassbinder, it describes the life of a married woman who wants to escape her mundane existence to be an actress, but ends up a whore. Superb, and completely original and audacious film-making for its time. Anna Karina doesn't so much act as react, and her every movement is watched by an awestruck Godard.

Unusually cast and playfully shot, Le Mépris follows the break-up of a marriage set against the backdrop of Fritz Lang supposedly shooting a film of Homer's Odyssey. The star attraction is Brigitte Bardot, at the height of her iconic status, who plays one half of the deteriorating marriage.
