The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

The film starts off with a small-time crook being released from prison and returning to the underworld. Sharing an apartment with his brother’s murderer and his lover Margaret, he starts to plan a robbery. Shot in black and white with a distinct rich visual style, this stands as one of his most memorable films.
