The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

Fassbinder’s first feature film stars himself as Franz, a pimp torn between lover Joanna and a handsome gangster, Bruno, sent after him by the syndicate he refuses to join. Seen as a fine example of the director’s early style with a heavy nouvelle vague influence, the film plays with emotional layers and a sardonic sense of humour.
