The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

One of the great American films. Robert Mitchum plays bogus preacher Harry Powell - a hymn-singing, widow-slaying psycho - in this juicy allegory of evil, greed and innocence. In this, the only film directed by British actor Charles Laughton, Mitchum found the stimulus he craved and delivered a spookily effective performance.

Possibly the greatest heist thriller ever, containing the unforgettable line: 'After all, crime is only a left-handed form of human endeavour'. It still looks fabulous too, a Brechtian ode to the urban wasteland with a first memorable role for Marilyn Monroe.
Dir. John Huston USA 1950 1h 52m
