This story of the deterioration of a man’s soul against the backdrop of the economic miracle of the 50s, was a major commercial success in Germany. Unsatisfied street barrow-vendor Hans can’t please his family and is mocked by his customers. The film takes a new direction when Hans decides to drink himself to death.
