Directors Focus: R.W. Fassbinder
Fri 8 - Sun 31 Aug
The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

A film crew and cast sit around a seedy seaside hotel in Spain waiting for shooting to start. Meanwhile, the production manager bullies everyone and sexual intrigues develop at the bar. The film effortlessly ridicules the then-fashionable concept of collective film-production by showing such a project disintegrating as it runs out of money and motivation.
