The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

Fassbinder stars in the role of Fox, a poor gay man who works in a circus sideshow until he wins the lottery and falls in love with a high-society heir. Dealing with some of Fassbinder’s central themes - the search for love (both gay and straight), exploitation and wealth - he described it as his most honest film.
