The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

Fassbinder was one of the first German directors to engage with social tensions caused by the post-war influx of migrant workers. Fatih Akin, a Turkish German, continues to address the struggles and debates of his minority community in our decade.
Violence lies just below the surface when Greek worker Jorges joins a group of young people hanging around their dull Munich apartment complex. Written, directed, acted and edited by Fassbinder himself, the film ranks among his most challenging and personal works.
