The disfigured wunderkind of the new German cinema, Fassbinder made over forty films before he died, burnt out from a drug overdose just after his 37th birthday, his self destructive tendencies reflecting those of his protagonists. Here we present some of his finest works alongside influences, and contemporary artists' responses to his life and films.

Fassbinder was one of the first German directors to engage with social tensions caused by the post-war influx of migrant workers. Fatih Akin, a Turkish German, continues to address the struggles and debates of his minority community in our decade.
Akin’s narrative is a meticulously woven fabric of chance and missed encounters which won 2007’s screenwriting award in Cannes. Edge of Heaven sets its stories against concrete politics: globalization, migration, the decline of the Left and the cultural and economic traffic between Germany and Turkey.

Head-On is a violent love story fuelled by cultural restrictions, self-hatred, anger and drugs. Its understanding of things Turkish within mainstream German society made it a cultural footnote. Akin rewrites the strategies and objectives of New German Cinema - particularly those of Fassbinder - by playfully undermining stereotypes including those about what ethnic filmmaking should be.
