THE 15th ISME INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

”Tradition and Change in Music and Music Education”
” The 15th conference of the International Society for Music Education runs for a week at the end of July with talks, exhibitions, concerts, and study sessions in a dozen different venues all over Bristol.
Arnolfini hosts eight events during the week including five lunchtime concerts at 1 pm which are open to the public, admission £1.
On Thursday 22, Japanese students give a performance of traditional and contemporary Japanese music. On Friday 23, the Bisschoppelijk College Band give a concert under the direction of the Dutch composer Hans Meeuws which includes his own “Kengramin”. The Solna Dance Group from Sweden perform on Saturday 24 and students from the Royal Holloway College give a concert of contemporary music under the British composer Brian Dennis on Tuesday 27. Finally on Wednesday 28, the Kynges Company from New Zealand presents a staging of John Rimmer’s “Gawain and the Green Knight”.
The special study sessions on “The Composer in Education” on Thursday 22, and “The Composer in the Community” on Tuesday 27 are open only to delegates, but the Saturday 24 session,” Composing for Children ‘ is open to the public. During the session, the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara will talk about his church opera “Marjatta, matala neiti” based on a poem from the Kalevala, which will then be performed by the Taptola choir and ensemble conducted by Erkki Pohjola in a production by Jussi Tapola.
