Arnolfini and Bristol Old Vic join forces for the first time to present a truly remarkable theatre show. A hit all over the world, small metal objects by Australia’s Back to Back Theatre comes to Bristol in May for their only UK shows of 2009.
Suddenly over a period of 4 days, a seating rake appears at The Podium in Broadmead Shopping Centre. Join us for 7 shows only, to become wired into the broadcast story of Gary and Steve, two men who usually escape notice. Here amidst the pedestrian traffic of the city, they play an inadvertent but pivotal role in the night of two ambitious executives they've arranged to meet for a transaction. As public mingle with performers, the intimacy and strangeness of their situation develops and small metal objects emerges as a sly and luminous depiction of everyday issues most take for granted.
A seating rake placed amidst everyday experience subverts our expectations as the audience become an installation for the general public and the general public become the extras of a subtle dramatic narrative. Examining how visibility is determined by our capacity to produce, small metal objects shows us beauty where it is hidden, gently nudging us into seeing the worth of the seemingly insignificant amongst us.
Described as master provocateurs, Back to Back Theatre are led by 6 actors with learning disabilities. Their work defies convention, challenges logic and questions the imperative to be ‘normal’.
“small metal objects turns the notion of theatre and the everyday inside out. It is a pure, open-hearted, complex and breathtaking production and a unique meditation on human worth.” Sydney Morning Herald
