The Makonde, who are originally from Northern Mozambique, traditionally produced softwood figures and masks for ritual dances. Responding to a demand from 1940 ‘s missionaries and traders, they began to make the playful and humorous figures from black hardwood. Themes such as family and sexual relations, spirits and demons, politics and colonialism are all touched upon and this exhibition, from the collection of Moti Malde, contains over 100 individual carvings.
