In 1972 American composer Milton Babbitt’s influential composition Philomel, for virtuoso voice and electronic tape, was performed at Arnolfini by Jane Manning. We will revisit this performance, and the instruments on which it was produced and performed – Jane Manning’s voice, the Revox player, and the original tapes. Alongside this, artist Stephen Cornford and composer Richard Barnard each debut new pieces, responding to and reusing elements from Philomel, and the Bristol Ensemble perform Babbitt’s virtuosic Wind Quartet (1953), giving us a chance to reassess his early instrumental work within the context of his electronic music, and the composer’s death earlier this year.
