Professor Vishnu Govind Jog is probably the best known and most celebrated classical Indian violinist. In his hands, the violin, a western instrument not normally associated with India, takes on all the subtlety of intonation and expressive power of the more traditional instruments of Indian music.

Now aged 63, this highly distinguished musician was professor of instrumental music at Bhatkhade University in Lucknow until 1962 when he joined All India Radio in Delhi as Music Producer, and later Deputy Chief Music Producer.

As a teacher of the highest eminence, he has been attached to the Ali Akbar College of Music in Berkley, California, and the Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta. In 1980 he received the Sangeet Akademi Award for Hindustani Music, and in January 1983 was awarded the great honour of Padmabhushan by the president of India.
