Arnolfini welcomes Room 13 Hareclive as they present an exhibition of their work inspired by their patron Richard Long.

Room 13 Hareclive is an independent artists’ studio based in the grounds of Hareclive Academy, Hartcliffe, and co-run by children and adults.  As the winner of Bristol 2015 Green Capital arts commission for Dundry View Neighbourhood Partnership, they set out to generate community and city interest in the beautiful but under-used green land around Hartcliffe known as the Dundry Slopes.

Starting with meeting and interviewing artist Richard Long, hosted by Arnolfini, and building on previous socially engaged arts practice, Room 13 Hareclive exhibits their collaborative exploration and re-imagining of Dundry Slopes, where the interests, wonder, curiosity, imagination and pioneering spirit of local children are leading the way.

Through dialogue with local people and organisations that use the Slopes, as well as discovering nature by foot, walking, wondering and exploring the landscape, Room 13 will produce functional yet poetic discovery maps and a bronze plaque to be installed on the Dundry Slopes.

“Room 13 is a brilliant example of how children can be empowered and celebrated as creative people.  I grew up in Bristol in the fifties and sixties and I owe a colossal amount to my school teachers for giving me the encouragement, recognition and support to make art, much as Room 13 is doing now for today’s generation. Richard Long

The artists’ collective for this project is comprised of children and young people from Hareclive Academy (Primary), Bridge Learning Campus and Merchants’ Academy (Secondary) and adult artist collaborators. This exhibition documents their creative process.

Room 13 Hareclive is a creative hub where transformations – material, ideas, personal and community – have been taking place in Hartcliffe since 2003.
