In 1974 Joseph Beuys undertook his most famous performance, the ironically titled I Like America and America Likes Me, where he flew to the US and lived in a gallery for a number of days with a wild coyote. He explained: ‘I wanted to isolate myself, insulate myself, see nothing of America other than the coyote.’ Beuys opposed the US military action in Vietnam, and also saw his practice as being a challenge to the hegemony of American art. Occupying an Arnolfini exhibition space for 5 days with a Belgian Shepherd and a Jack Russell terrier, Savage interprets Beuys’ performance as a fresh protest in light of the prevailing international forces of political and cultural imperialism.
