Young People's Festival of Ideas: Let's talk about mental health

Wednesday 11 November 2015, 19:00 to 20:30

The final event of the second series will again create a platform for young people to engage in debate and challenge ideas around important issues

This event will explore mental health and how it affects the lives of young people today:

Are we talking about mental health enough? What do you think of the casual, stereotyped use of
mental illnesses to describe personality traits? Do you think prejudice against people with mental illness affects people as much as homophobia or racism? How do events in the media affect people's perception of mental illness?

The panel:
Laura Brain is a Participation and Rights worker at Off The Record, Bristol. She believes that mental health is not just about someone's chemical make up but our reaction to the social injustice in the world. Her role is to empower young people to challenge stigma around mental health and to ensure young people's voices are acted upon.

Jonny Benjamin, Mental Health Campaigner, author and vlogger. In January 2014 Jonny launched a social media campaign called Find 'Mike' to search for the stranger who talked him out of taking his own life in 2008. The purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness of suicide and mental illness. It went viral and received global media attention.

Ailsa Fineron is a feminist, mixed race, bipolar human being who uses photography and writing to communicate all this, their surrounding issues, and more with the world.

Tanaka Chigwada, a young social entrepreneur, will also be speaking.

Brought to you by an event partnership between Bristol Festival of Ideas, Salaam Shalom, Young Arnolfini and Rising Arts Agency, the event is open to all.
