Space-in-kind: Hugh McCann

One of our former Visitor Experience Assistants Hugh McCann is coming back to Arnolfini this month to develop a new performance piece. As part of a series of blog posts about our artists' space-in-kind programme, he tells us a bit about what he'll be working on...

Hello, my name is Hugh McCann and I’m a theatre-maker. This August, from the 28th-30th I will be using the Arnolfini’s Dark Studio to develop my new performance, NOISE.

NOISE is a live performance that takes place in the dark and sits somewhere between a meditation tape and storytelling. It is a piece about the frenetic pace of modern life, that aims to create a space for calm and stillness. With so much visual pollution littering the contemporary urban environment, I want to invite audiences to rest their eyes and slow down. NOISE is a fictional portrait of a world that’s lost its moon, and swings between different characters, all trying to go about their lives in peace.

The script for NOISE was developed whilst undertaking Goldsmith’s MA in Writing for Performance and Dramaturgy, which I have just completed. An extract of the first draft was scratched earlier this year at Battersea Arts Centre, and a few months later, a chunk of the second draft was shared at Soho Theatre.

NOISE has also been developed with support from musicians Alex McKenzie, Josh Barfoot and Ric Wadsworth, and dramaturg Ella Konzon.

The redrafting process is now coming to an end, and using the space at Arnolfini will allow me to begin developing and building the accompanying soundscape and rehearsing the spoken element of the show. I will also begin considering how sensory elements may be bought in to the performance, and there will be a lot of experimenting with how the script is brought to life. I will also be working with my long-time collaborator Tom Nicholas on the soundscape and live music elements.

I will be organising an informal sharing of NOISE on the 30th, where I will invite feedback to help me to continue developing the piece, with the aim of 2018 touring. If you would like to attend, please e-mail me at hughmccann94@gmail.com to RSVP.

I look forward to seeing you there!
