Continuing Arnolfini/Music’s occasional involvement with early music (and the very successful Waverly Consort event last summer), the ARS NOVA CONSORT OF VOICES will be giving a performance of madrigals/solos/duets/readings of Jacobean and Elizabethan music based on the theme of Edmund Spencer’s The Shepherd’s Calender. Readings selected by Jack Edwards. The music selected and arranged by Peter Holman, director of ARS NOVA.
The programme is a pastoral and arcadian realisation of English music and song, poetry and prose depicting the seasons of the year from spring to winter. The period is from the late sixteenth to early seventeenth century and includes music by Dowland, Jones, Coperario, Hume etc., and the readings are taken from Shakespeare, Jonson, the Jacobean dramatists, the metaphysical poets and other contemporary sources.
