B-Boys, B-Girls, Break Dancers, Wannabes and Posers: 'Graffiti Art in Bristol' 30th Anniversary Party

Sunday 19 July 2015, 14:00 to 20:30

Celebrating 30 years since The Wild Bunch came to Arnolfini.

In 1985, Arnolfini presented an exhibition entitled Graffiti Art in Bristol. This ground-breaking show was one of the very earliest to bring graffiti into an established art gallery, and has attained legendary status in the history of Bristol’s street art and music culture.

For one night during the exhibition’s month-long run, The Wild Bunch – a Bristol-based music collective out of which Massive Attack and the producer Nellee Hooper emerged – performed in the downstairs gallery to hundreds of people.

Phil Johnson, then a lecturer at a local college and now a writer and music promoter, filmed the 1985 Wild Bunch event. He recently rediscovered the original lo-fi VHS camera tape, and Arnolfini will screen it during a special 30th anniversary celebration. If you or your friends and family were there, come along and see if you can spot yourselves. If you weren’t, check out what you missed.

The footage will be shown in the auditorium from 2pm until 8:30pm. There will be an accompanying DJ set - featuring Queen Bee, Krissy Kriss and guests - from 4pm to 8.30pm. There will also be breakdancing, and collections of memorabilia on display.

Part of the Arnolfini Story Project

Arnolfini Story is a multifaceted project celebrating the heritage of the organisation. Through it, we offer information and material from our archives, invite you to share your Arnolfini memories with us, and commission artists and writers to create new responses to our history. It launches in 2015, 40 years after Arnolfini moved in to the Bush Warehouse, thereby becoming one of the first organisations to pioneer reuse of Bristol’s derelict docks.
