Basim Magdy: Advice for the Young and the Seekers of Sanity

Friday 14 April 2017 to Sunday 06 August 2017, 15:00

An offsite work by Basim Magdy, Advice for the Young and the Seekers of Sanity, is currently presented on Big Screen Bristol in Millennium Square.

Advice for the Young and the Seekers of Sanity, 2012, will be screened at variable times throughout the day, but can be viewed at 3pm every weekday during the exhibition period, apart from 22 to 29 May, 6 to 12 June, 1 to 16 July and 28 to 30 July.

This short film takes one of Magdy’s 13 Essential Rules into public space, directly addressing passers-by.

In 13 Essential Rules for Understanding the World, 2011, a cynical analysis of society is presented through the disillusioned voices of colourful tulips. As in many of Magdy’s works, pessimism about the future is offset by a comic sense of the ridiculous. Dark humour reveals the artist’s scepticism about dreams of a more progressive society and political systems that claim social transformation. Watch the film in Gallery 5 and compare it with the offsite work.
