Michael Ondaatje on Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film
Followed by a screening of The Conversation (12)
(Dir Francis Coppola USA 1974 113m) 8.40pm
During the filming of his novel, The English Patient, Michael Ondaatje became increasingly fascinated as he watched the film’s editor Walter Murch at work. To celebrate the publication of The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of
Editing Film (Bloomsbury £25), Michael Ondaatje will talk to Gareth Evans about the work of Walter Murch. Murch’s work includes The Godfather Trilogy, American Graffiti and Apocalypse Now. Michael Ondaatje is the author several prose works including the Booker Prize winning The English Patient. Gareth Evans is an independent film programmer and writer.
Showing in a rare new print that includes a reworked soundtrack by Murch, Coppola’s classic The Conversation is a bleak, beautiful film about the threat of electronic surveillance.
