A credible and grim portrait of the coming of age of a sullen teenage girl living in a rough housing estate in Essex, was praised for its unflinching honesty and lack of sentimentality or moralising. Assured direction, and excellent performances from Katie Jarvis and Michael Fassbender made this one of 2009's stand outs.
Dir. Andrea Arnold, UK / Netherlands, 2009, 2h 3m
