IBT17 NEW BLOODS: Because of Hair - Vivian Chinasa Ezugha

Friday 10 February 2017, 18:00 to 19:00
Free

Developing the next generation of UK performers and live artists. Using memories of her experience of masquerades in Nigeria, Because of Hair employs movement and masks of hair as power objects

My hair is my power

'Here I am, I have nothing but my body and my masks. I move with my history'

'Growing up in a village in Nigeria, having no hair marked my position as a female. Village girls were bald and looked like men, while city girls wore extensions and adorned their head with beautiful jewels. '

Using memories of her experience of masquerades in Nigeria, Because of Hair employs movement and masks of hair as power objects, which conceal and reveal the black body, the black female.
