Materialism describes the way in which the physical materials of film technology are made visible within the work itself, thereby challenging the usual Hollywood practice of hiding the mode of production so as to sustain the illusion necessary to enter into a staged, fictional world. These five films aim to investigate the structural qualities of different forms of moving images, from Malcolm Le Grice’s use of an obsolete 9.5mm film to video art made for TV and mobile phones.
