Alongside the Say Parsley exhibition, we present a weekend of films which rework archival footage of past colonial projects, questioning the camera’s role as an instrument of domination.

Fri 2 Jul 6.30pm
From The Pole to the Equator (PG)
Directors Gianikian and Ricci Lucchi reworked, hand-tinted and slowed down footage of ‘exotic’ people and places from the film archives of Luca Comerio (1874-1940), and re-assembled it with an electronic score to create this powerful and haunting account of the colonial psyche and domination.

Sat 3 Jul 7.30pm
Mother Dao the Turtlelike (NC)
Footage from over one thousand nitrate documentaries shot in Dutch Indonesian between 1912 and about 1933 was combined with a new digital soundtrack to make this astounding, award-winning film. It is full of startling images, recording the horror of putting people to work under colonialism.

Haiti Kino Kids Project: Kids Zoetrope Workshop & Screenings
Donations Welcome
The Haiti Kino Kids Project (HKKP) is a mobile cinema and cultural exchange organised by Bristol’s Cube Cinema. Haitian children affected by the earthquakes are experiencing untold damage and despair. HKKP gives them the opportunity to see films from around the world, to take part in workshops to make their own films, and for children back in Bristol to make ‘film postcards’ for Haiti screenings. On the closing weekend of the Say Parsley exhibition, HKKP presents an afternoon film screening and activities for children at Arnolfini. All profits will be donated to HKKP.
