Remember Saro-Wiwa A Living Memorial

Memory Unbound Tour: The Battle Bus

Internationally acclaimed writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and his eight colleagues were judicially executed by the Nigerian state on 10 November 1995 for campaigning against the environmental and social devastation being caused by the activities of multinational oil companies in the Niger Delta region, Nigeria. The Battle Bus by sculptor Sokari Douglas Camp will be sited on the quayside outside Arnolfini. It draws inspiration from the medicine buses that rove between villages and towns in Nigeria delivering messages, aid and advice to those communities. The presence of the stainless-steel Battle Bus it is hoped makes clear the inextricable links between ourselves in the UK and those in the Niger Delta. Remember Saro-Wiwa A Living Memorial is an initiative led by the interdisciplinary organisation PLATFORM who in 2005 commissioned artists Sokari Douglas Camp and Siraj Izhar to develop commemorative projects that debate the global interdependency on oil and the cause and effects of this demand on global communities.
