Room 237 returns to Arnolfini to present the monolithic sounds of Emptyset, accompanied by an all-new A/V show featuring bespoke instruments. We also welcome the Bristol debut of Kangding Ray, whose grandiose vision of techno will be fully realised in Bristol’s best equipped venue. A new addition to the lineup is Mr Spoon who's dedication to the scene comes alive in the form of abstract, explorative live techno jams. Joining them will be a live performance from Bristol’s Sophia Loizou and Room 237 resident and curator, Black Amiga.

Emptyset is a London/Berlin based production project formed in 2005 by James Ginzburg and Paul Purgas. The project examines the material properties of sound and its correspondence with architecture, performance and physical modes of production. Their recorded output includes the releases Borders for Thrill Jockey in 2017, Recur and Collapsed for raster-noton, Signal a commissioned performance working with ionospheric propagation and Medium an expanded live recording in Woodchester Mansion in Gloucestershire. Emptyset have produced installations for Spike Island, Tate Britain and the Architecture Foundation and presented live performances with CTM/Transmediale, Unsound, Ruhrtriennale, Kunsthalle Zurich and Sonic Acts amongst other notable events and venues.

There are few musicians who manage to explore the convergence between techno and experimental as successfully as David Letellier. Known as Kangding Ray, he has been producing for almost a decade, releasing his music exclusively on Raster-Noton and Stroboscopic Artefacts. His most recent album ’HYPER OPAL MANTIS’ released on Stroboscopic Artefacts heralds a new era for Kangding Ray, where he explores the tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, which are central themes in electronic music in general, and Techno in particular. The means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it has produced.

Sophia Loizou will present a new project entitled ‘Perceptual Architecture of Invention’, exploring the potential of fictional environments in the creation of possible worlds & alternate realities. Remnants of the past, harvested from the dimension of radio & tape, mingle and collide with the unfamiliar. Spectres and shadows experience the dynamical behaviours of dreamed ecosystems, each encounter is different yet there is a sense that all emerges from the same amaranthine fabric.
