TALK | THEATRES OF DREAMS: STEVE TOMPKINS, HAWORTH TOMPKINS

Thursday 28 February 2019, 18:30 to 20:00

SOLD OUT // Presented by Architecture Centre, Architect Steve Tompkins of Haworth Tompkins on the recent restoration and reinvention of the Bristol Old Vic and the Battersea Arts Centre.

Hear how the history of these two popular theatres takes centre stage through beautiful restoration and transformation.

An award-winning architectural studio with an international reputation for intelligent, purposeful design, Haworth Tompkins have made a name for themselves in reinventing spaces for the performing arts; including Liverpool’s Everyman and London’s National Theatre. Bristol Old Vic becomes their most recent jewel in the crown, devising a foyer that is stage-like in its theatricality and city square-like in it’s magnetism for the city’s glitterati.

Opening to the public in October 2018, the work comprises a radical new front of house space and studio theatre for the Grade I listed Bristol Old Vic, the oldest continuously working theatre in the English-speaking world. Successfully pulling the theatre’s 250 year old history into the 21st century, the project aims to open up the front of house areas to a wider, more diverse audience and to place the theatre at the heart of Bristol’s public life and public space.
