Richard Hylton’s new book, The Nature of the Beast: Cultural Diversity and the Visual Arts Sector, (ICIA at University of Bath), meets a long overdue need for public analysis of cultural diversity policies in the visual arts over the past four decades. Hylton’s talk offers a fascinating insight into the roles played by the GLC, Arts Council England, publicly funded English galleries and arts organisations. He charts cultural diversity’s various incarnations, from ‘ethnic arts’ in the late 70s, through to culturally diverse arts’ in the 21st century. Hylton’s assessment of the impact on Black visual arts activity is invaluable to those with an interest in cultural policy, curatorial practice and the visual arts in general.
