Join Satish Kumar to discuss Richard Long’s Boyhood Line on The Downs, and walking as a practice and method of engagement with the environment.

Boyhood Line, 2015, is a new work by Richard Long. Made with white limestone, the work centres on a footpath on The Downs, close to Ladies Mile – a ‘desire line’ which has been made over many months by the footprints of people walking across the Downs, instinctively following the same path and establishing an unplanned path through the grass. For more information on Boyhood Line, visit here.

Satish Kumar will lead a walk and discussion about the work, and his experience of walking as a practice and method of engagement with the environment.

Meet Satish at the site of the work, close to Ladies Mile on The Downs.

Satish Kumar is an activist and editor who has been quietly setting the Global Agenda for change for over 50 years. He has been a Jain monk, nuclear disarmament advocate, pacifist, and is the current editor of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine. Kumar is on the Advisory Board of Our Future Planet, a unique online community sharing ideas for real change and in recognition of his commitment to animal welfare and compassionate living, and was recently elected vice-president with the RSPCA. He continues to teach and run workshops on reverential ecology, holistic education and voluntary simplicity.

Richard Long has realised many works that engage with the landscape, investigating nature and his experience within nature. Like other artists associated with the Conceptual and Minimal Art movements of the mid-sixties, he emphasises the process of perception and ideas in art, while his works create moments of beauty and poetry inside and outside of gallery spaces.

Walk & Talk Series

Walk & Talk is a series of lectures and workshops presented informally whilst walking around Bristol. These guided tours are specially developed and led by invited artists and academics with an interest in walking. The Walk & Talk series is part of the public programme of events presented alongside Richard Long’s major new solo exhibition at Arnolfini, TIME AND SPACE, Friday 30 July to Sunday 15 November.
